A LETTER FROM OUR GENERAL DIRECTOR
Our 2010 - 2011 Membership Campaign
Dear Friends,
I was going to start this letter with a limerick or a joke, like we do during the Christmas Beg-a-thon, but why not cut to the chase? We all know what the last two years have been financially, and how devastating they have been to the arts. Through your generosity we have been able to keep the doors open and produce two of the most artistically successful seasons in our history.
We have not only produced a world premiere, Rumpelstiltskin, but added new works to our repertoire: Daughter of the Regiment, A Waltz Dream, and Hansel and Gretel. In addition, we have presented the company debuts of young talents Emily Douglass (Daughter of the Regiment), Jordan Miller (Anything Goes), Hai-Ting Chin (Hansel and Gretel), Raymond Ayers and Kandis Chappell (A Little Night Music), and Ashraf Sewailam and Benjamin Robinson (The Pirates of Penzance). We have a spectacular season planned for next year: Gigi, The Barber of Seville, The Gondoliers and Fiddler on the Roof. All we need now is to balance the books.
Between Jack Montgomery and myself speaking to you before shows, and all the letters you receive from us, you surely know it hasn’t been easy for us. In fact, the 2008-2009 season saw us take a very large loss indeed. We must end 2009-2010 with a balanced budget. It is within reach, but we need your help to do this, by renewing your membership for the coming season. Remember, your membership not only supports Lyric Opera and our Summer Academy but also helps keep the Birch North Park Theatre an asset for all of San Diego to enjoy.
I know how hard it has been for many of you these past years, but things are looking better, ticket sales are improving, and it’s time for all of us to stop being afraid of the future. We’ve made it through 31 seasons together, and with a little more effort we can make it for many more to come. It really all comes down to you our patrons. When you renew your membership, you are making a choice: a choice that says, “We want LOSD to go on as a healthy, vibrant company and the Birch North Park Theatre to be an asset for our community. We want Jack and Leon to continue training young talent with the Summer Academy and we want to see the kind of shows that can introduce our children and grandchildren to musical theater in all its wonderful forms.”
The choice is yours. Renew today at the highest level you can and help keep this magnificent asset a thriving going concern that generations of San Diegans can enjoy, and so generations of young people can say they got their start at the Birch North Park Theatre with Lyric Opera San Diego.
Sincerely,
Leon Natker
